8 Best Tips to Prepare for your Outdoor Family Sessions

The temperature is slowly dropping, which means it’s finally time for outdoor family sessions. This is one of my favorite times of year for outdoor sessions and seeing all of you and your sweet families. Plus, Austin has some charming locations for us to use.

How to Prepare for Outdoor Family Sessions

One of the best ways to ensure you have the most enjoyable experience possible is to help you to prepare your family ahead of time. Here are a handful of my helpful tips to be sure everyone arrives happy and ready to have a great time!

Have a Snack

Pack snacks and drinks for kids. Make sure to avoid anything too messy, but give them an option or two.

A Little Incentive

Have a fun incentive for your kids after your session (maybe their favorite treat). A little something for them to look forward to after a session can be all a little one needs.

Backup Outfit

Bring a backup outfit for everyone in the session -just in case. Being outdoors can sometimes bring unexpected “ugh-ohs,” and it’s a great idea to have a backup option.

Layers

With the weather being unpredictable, dress your child in layers. If they are comfortable, they will be happiest. Being able to shed a layer is an excellent idea if it means your little ones don’t feel smothered if the weather is warmer that evening.

Hair Prep

Sometimes, parks can get windy. If your kids (or you) have long hair, make sure you use some product or bring hairpins. You’ll be glad to have the option if you need it.

Have a Nap

Make sure your kids get some rest before the session. It’s best not to get them to session directly from daycare etc. Allowing time to rest will ensure your little ones are happy and enjoy the session, too!

Have Simple Expectations

But, MOST IMPORTANTLY, please don’t stress and enjoy the moment together. Kids are naturally curious and energetic, so they will want to run around and won’t always want to sit still for pictures.

Let’s embrace that because you will look back at these images years from now and remember the busy toddler. I can photoshop many things but can’t edit the stress away from parents’ faces.

Try to relax, enjoy this time together, and trust me to handle the rest. We will get a lot of sweet memorable moments documented, I promise!
